Written for a general readership by folklorists, cultural anthropologists, and historians, this book resulted from the Wisconsin Folklife Festivals staged by the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., and by the Wisconsin Arts Board in Madison, Wisconsin, in honor of the 1998 Wisconsin Sesquicentennial.
