Winterset

A hidden past. A house with secrets. And one chance for two wounded hearts to find love together.

Northern England, Late Fall, 1820

Katherine Lockwood is hiding for her life in the most unlikely of places: the forgotten priest holes in the abandoned Winterset Grange manor house. When Kate learns that Winterset's long-absent owner, Mr. Oliver Jennings, is about to return, she is desperate to find a way to make him leave, even if it means "haunting" him from behind her protective walls.

After a grand tour of the Continent, Oliver returns home to England determined to make the most of his inheritance. But from the moment he arrives, nothing is as he expected. His manor is in disrepair, the steward hired to care for his estate is a thief, and to top it all off, Winterset is haunted. Undeterred, Oliver resolves to reclaim his life, piece by piece.

When Oliver discovers the hidden rooms, he's shocked and pleased that his "ghost" is actually a beautiful young woman. Captivated by Kate and her story, he invites her to stay at Winterset under his protection.

Yet, danger persists as the man who threatens Kate's safety learns of her ruse and attempts to exact his revenge. Kate and Oliver find themselves ensnared in a perilous game of cat and mouse against a powerful opponent while also trying to untangle their blossoming feelings in this enthralling gothic Regency romance.

An incredibly sweet regency era story that I absolutely loved!

This is a book I enjoyed as I sat down on a rainy day, and read it cover to cover. It was a sweet, clean regency era romance that brought me joy as I read each page. It's a book that begins in Northern England in the fall of 1860, where Katherine Lockwood finds that her beloved father has died, so her home, her beloved Winterset, is now in the hands of Mr. Oliver Jennings, who has been content to live abroad on his grand tour on the Continent, until now! Mr. Jennings has written the steward of his Winterset estate to ready the residence because he is ready to come home. What he doesn't know is that Katherine, who he had presumed died with her father, is very much alive, and she has secretly been living at Winterset since her father died. Now with Mr. Jennings coming home, Katherine devises a plan with her servants and dear friends, the housekeeper and the butler, to make Mr. Jennings turn and run away from Winterset, and she sets a plan in motion to do just that. She can't allow him to know she is alive, nor can she let him take over Winterset, because she is just sure he will kick her to the curb if he finds her there, and she can't leave the only place in the world where she feels safe. Mr. Jennings is delighted with Winterset, and sets to examine every inch of it, and finds several hidden rooms, and a beautiful "ghost" hiding amongst those hidden spaces. He decides to just see how it all plays out, and continues to play a cat and mouse game with Katherine that will lead them both down a path they least expected! I loved this sweet story! I rate it 5 stars, and would recommended it highly because it is a great, clean and fun story set in my favorite genre! The characters really make the story come to life, and I love that opposites attract, as we find out in this story!
