Spellbinding Mystery Thriller

As a long time participant in the kinds of military exercises Lacombe describes, I would like to commend him on his accuracy. I've yet to encounter a woman as tough as Sarah, but who knows, she may exist out there. The research this author must have done is flawless, and because of his detail, i especially enjoyed the intense combat scenes. Lacombe brings forth a point that we should never forget; namely, North Korea is a nation to be reckoned with. Winter Games is a great read, and I recommend it strongly.

Action packed thriller

I was tremendously impressed with John Lacombe's debut novel. The military details are very realistic. I love the way Lacombe encourages a willing suspension of disbelief in the development of a strong female warrior named Sarah. The action scenes are both suspenseful and thrilling, and the ending is stellar. I read the book on a cross-country plane trip, which made an otherwise mundane business trip worthwhile.

Fast-paced story/ Great Characters

Looking for a fast-paced and exciting international thriller? Winter Games follows 24-year-old Tim Sutton, who is running his comic book shop in a small New Hampshire town, until a mysterious package arrives. The package, a comic tampered with and filled with secret codes, tells Tim that he must go on a cross-country (and cross-Pacific!) journey to save his younger brother, who went missing 5 years ago. From a simple, monotonous existence, Tim's journey brings him in contact with a failed FBI agent, a rogue special operations agent, a Chicago drug lord, and the most top secret military operations in North Korea. Will Tim find his brother? If so, will he be the same? And can he trust Sarah, his fiery and startlingly adept contact, who has pledged to help him reach his brother? This book is a page-turner from the first chapter. The action is non-stop and the characters are so interesting and distinct, that you will want to read more about them, whether they are good or evil. Highly recommended!

When does the next one come out?

Winter Games is a quick, fun read. It reminds me a lot of the pace of an early Clive Cussler book with a little bit of Tom Clancy (less the extremely detailed military technical sidebars) mixed in. The novel drew me in and I ended up reading through it in one sitting. Looking forward to what Lacombe does next.

Lacombe's first novel is a winner

This book is exciting and fast-paced - a quick read perfect for the beach, the train, or a cold day. If you like thriller or military novels, this is a great book (I like murder mystery and thriller novels, but I imagine that people who enjoy Tom Clancy will also enjoy this book). The writing style is clear and descriptive (but not long-winded), so you feel like you're a part of the action. When the story ended, I came away feeling satisfied that loose ends had been tied up, but excited to read more. I look forward to Lacombe's 2nd book.
