Book Overview

In the remote North York Moors of England, young Thomas pursues the conquest of Magnus, an 800-year-old kingdom and island castle that harbors secrets dating back to the days of King Arthur and Merlin. To win Magnus, however, is only the beginning of Thomas' quest, one that will unearth ancient secrets, test his fragile faith, and place him squarely against an evil conspiracy that has ruled the land for centuries. In the year A.D. 1312, an orphan named Thomas believes that by leaving the monks who raised him, he is also leaving God. His vowed goal is to reconquer Magnus, an oppressed earldom, savagely taken twenty years earlier. First, however, he must save a knight from the gallows. Complicating his new army of one are two others rescued at the the same time -- a mute slave girl and a scoundrel pickpocket. During his almost impossible attempt at victory, Thomas discovers it may only be the first battle against the dark conspiracy behind Magnus.

Great Reading

I could read this book over and over and not get tired of it. The Winds od Light books are some of the best books I have ever read.

well-written historical fiction--couldn't put it down

I know I should save 5 stars for Doestoevsky, but this was food for my soul when I needed a good book! There are little historical tidbits searched out and well-used by the author, and the culture of the day stays true. I loved that Brouwer didn't tread the normal path for medieval novels--I was kept guessing, yet the plot followed well. I devoured the whole series, and plan to read them to my children.

The book is well worth the read.

As a fifth grade teacher, I read this story to my class. They loved it and we were all caught up in the mystery and the characters. Be careful, when you read the first book you will want to continue reading the entire series. I recommend this for people who love historical fiction and want something well-researched about the medieval times.

Wonderful book to read while studying the 14th century.

My children are doing a unit study on the 14th century and learning about knights and castles etc...so I added this book to our studies and found it was wonderful. It has a Christian perspective of peacefulness rather than the barbarian style so often shown in that time. I would recommend it to other Christian families.
