A Great Cosmic Joke

I just read this book for the fourth time -- and I've finally figured it out. At the end of the book we see Hunter's life flash before his eyes, reliving bits of what has happened to him in each of the previous 15 books. But, you see, the book itself is doing the same thing: it is an adventure that is a combination of all the previous Wingman books, all jumbled up and rolled into one last adventure. It marks the end of the original Wingman series -- and we are literally seeing all the previous adventures flash before our eyes. And the ending, is really just the beginning of Maloney's "Starhawk" series because I'm not sure all the fans know this but "Starhawk" IS Hawk Hunter!

Is this the end?

We are still stuck in this alternative universe. The first two thirds of the book deal with Agent Y (Yaz) and his compatriots trying to find out what happened to Hawk and the crew of the B-2000 that blew Japan to Kingdom Come. Also...during this time, Vicktor Robotov visits the Falkland Islands and meets the Man. In this world, Vicktor has the power of healing, unlike his devilish self in the world we were familiar with. Vicktor decides he must find Hunter. The search finally ends for both parties in Afghanistan, although the synopsis on the back cover said Europe. Hunter is locked in a battle between the Red and Blue Army, fighting over one woman. Hunter and the crew must also overcome an approaching army of mercenaries from the south. The ending of the book sounds like Hunter's life is passing before his eyes, as Maloney does a quick view of the Wingman series up until the Death Orbit scenario. The book ended as if either Hunter died, or he is in a state of dreaming or a coma. We shall see if the Wingman continues. Now that Maloney has the Shuttle Ops series going, who knows.

What's Next?

I have read all of the Wingman books and this is one of my favorites. I wonder, where the past three books a dream or is he back in his own dimension? If you liked the other 15 books then you will love this one. Happy reading.

The Tomorrow War continues the saga, but leaves you hungry.

The latest in the Wingman series answers some questions, but leaves you with some new ones. While author Maloney keeps Hawk Hunter and his companions on the run in an alternative to the alternative world, you finish this 16th novel with the need for at least a number 17.Maloney's innovative free association technique that brings characters from other books and series is a kick. More often than not, you find yourself smiling at the recurrence of good guys and bad guys from the past. It's also great to have enough mayhem to satisfy readers of this sort of book, but without the gross misogyny so often used in this genre. What happens in The Tomorrow War? Does Hawk get what he wants or what he needs? I won't tell details, though my comment about the need for a sequel should tell you something.
