The only thing out-of-date about this book are the prices of the wines! Otherwise, it is a grand resource written for the "ordinairy" person who appreciates a good tasting wine and would like to know more. The author writes about wine varietals: red and whites, blushes and blends, sparklers, and dessert wines ... and why they taste so good. The author with a Ph.D. and his wife M.B.O. (must be obeyed) are highly qualified to describe their wine experiences. He performed research some of which involved viticulture at the University of Michigan. Most appropriately they have tasted thousands of wines from all over the USA and different regions of the world. They base their descriptions not just on scholarly research but on *personal* *experience* ... the best and *only* approved method for this subject! The book covers everything one ever wanted to know about wine: wine bottle styles, labels, glasses, serving hints, components of quality, tasting tips ... But the most important value is the review of the different wine varieties and their descriptions. Dr. Alan Putnam includes superb descriptions of American varieties in addition to the most well known French, Italian, German, and Caiifornia wines. He does a great over view of wines throughtout the world: Argentina, Australia, Canada, Chile, Sicily, Portugal, Spain and Austria. He describes lesser known wine growing regions, also, such as wines of Greece, New Zealand (which has become a better known region since the mid-1990s), Romania, South Africa (also has become world reknown since the book was published) and the unlikely Balkans, specifically Bulgaria. Importantly, the author reviews wines, wineries and vineyards located throughout the United States. I was pleased to discover Lemon Creek Winery from Southwest Michigan mentioned (one which I visited in July 1996) ... Overall, the author is imminently qualified to discuss his subject and concludes the book with *facts* about wine and health, including statistics and peer-reviewed research to back up the health claims. Despite its publication date, 1994, the book is a pleasure to read and contains valuable facts some of which are hard to find elsewhere. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
