"Sometimes she would go and look at Hiram's truck. Its wheels had been removed and the windshield was missing, along with quite a few engine parts and the rear window, but no one had made any attempt to cart the whole thing away - access clearly too difficult. At first it had annoyed her, sitting there by the side of the river - ugly scar - something man-made, violently forced into nature. When she came to study it, however, she gradually modified her opinion. ... If nature had accepted it, why should not she? Nature always adapted itself to the unexpected - turned it to its own use, got on with life. 'Sometimes there isn't anything so pretty as windsown, ' Mr. Rathenau had said. She looked at the mouldering wreck and thought perhaps both he and nature knew best.
