Winds of Change: A Mesilla Traveler Novel

By Jan D Thomas

The winds of war do not stop at the edge of a quiet town.
In the years after the Treaty of Mesilla, Lance Wright has built a life of faith, family, and hard-won peace in the New Mexico borderlands. Once a soldier, now a merchant and respected voice among the people of Mesilla, Lance wants only to protect his wife, Lorena, their children, and the community that has become his home.
But as the Civil War reaches the Southwest, Mesilla is pulled between Union loyalty, Confederate ambition, old Mexican roots, and the fragile bonds of neighborly trust. Flags change, armies come and go, and political quarrels threaten to become bloodshed and often result in death or wounded people. Caught between powerful men and frightened townspeople, Lance must walk a dangerous line-keeping order, guarding secrets, and choosing mercy when vengeance seems easier.
From Confederate occupation and the Battle for Mesilla to the later wounds of political violence and the coming of the railroad, The Winds of Change follows one family and one community through decades of upheaval. Rich with frontier history, Christian conviction, family devotion, and the enduring struggle to forgive, this Mesilla Traveler novel asks what it means to remain faithful when history itself keeps changing the ground beneath your feet.
