This has everything you need.

I actually read this book a while back , while getting my certification. The book covers EVERYTHING you need to know for the Win Arch exams. But its more than that , its a reference you can still use after you're certified.Alot of whats in there is now being updated ,but it covers also alot of foundations of the architectures so that you have an understanding of them - Not a memorisation of features that you just type in. ie: Even when the architectures update - You dont need to do the PARROT memorise rubbish , but actually have no problem updating because you understand the architecture and don't just quote it. This book is for people who are serious about UNDERSTANDING architecture and not those just trying to get a certification so they can say I'm MCSD and sit on their laurels devaluating the certification for the rest of us. As far as it's value as a study guide - I never had one question in either of my exams that the book never answered. My marks were all very high , including 100% for development methodoligies. This guy is good - DAMN good. And I wish he'd write the books on the new certs - Including SQL and Visual C books - I'd buy them all. Come on Bruce!

More than a test prep publication!

I read the book from cover to cover and found it very informing. Bruce tries to cover everything in the Windows architecture..I MEAN EVERYTHING! I would not want this to be my only test prep guide because it does cover so much(Maybe too much!). Although it is rather boring, it is a great reference(We are talking about Windows architecture here folks, theres not much entertainment value in that!)

An Excellant Book and even better Philosophy.

This book seperates the Men from the Boys. Some of the prior comments I've read stem from pure ignorance. If your looking for the book, "Answers to WinArch I & II Exams", call 1-800-GET-REAL. Don't bother commenting any code you write. We'll be chopping it all out anyway.

If you want a paper MCSD, go get an exam guide. Otherwise...

learn what you SHOULD know by reading this book. With many, many years in the industry, Bruce knows what Windows is all about, and he puts it down on paper in this rather massive tome. This book covers Windows Architecture in its entirety, and does not pretend to be merely an exam guide for those seeking to memorize a list of answers. If you know THIS material, you know Windows, and you will be a far better developer than those "paper MCSD's" who have merely skimmed the light material included in other, purported study volumes. It's the difference between Tolstoy and the Cliff's Notes to War and Peace. Make your own choice.

What the *real* MCSD needs.

This book is absolutely stellar. Be warned though...if you are looking for "cheat sheets" to get you through the exam (while learning nothing in the process...) this is NOT your book. If you want to LEARN the real deal (and pass the exams easily in the process) from an obviously experienced pro then you must pick this up. There are gobs of applied examples and labs (including code) and plenty of real world experience to go along with it. The database and COM sections are especially good and more importantly, lucid. The author takes a very no-holds-barred approach which means MS doesn't always come out looking great, but it is all well-balanced and more importantly, highly objective. Plus, the author has some brilliantly funny moments as well, a necessity when dealing with anything as dry as studying for a programming exam. I strongly recommend this to anyone involved in Windows programming whether you are certifying or not. It is an excellent reference! ! and as a MCT I've been referring to it again and again for classroom work. This book separates the pros from the wannabes. My only complaints about this book are:1. The publisher hosed two appendices on the tests themselves (w/o notifying the author)2. The sample tests are all MCSE, NOT MCSD as the jacket stated.Otherwise it's a must have!
