Knight puts lie to any such thinking because, although it is clear that he knows very much about the language, it was just right to tell a beautiful, wonderfully engaging story about two loves...one lost, the other eternal. Knight's steadfast love for the land is evident from the opening pages of his novel, and his devotion to that theme is stated immediately and poetically in 348 pages filled with the lives of residents of the land. He succeeded in fabricating an engrossing book that makes crystal clear that while the land is habitat for man, it is so much more. Many loves are won and/or lost, Knight makes plain, some with heartbreaking conclusions. But man has never ever forsaken the land. Love of land is eternal."
