Will Mrs. Major Go to Hell?

Aloise Buckley Heath was born in 1918 and died in 1967, suddenly, tragically; mother of ten children and, in the opinion of a discriminating few who knew her work, a major humorist who, if she had written more, if she had cultivated her fans, would have died with a great literary reputation - which this book asserts. She hated to write. She wrote only when forced to do so by editors, sisters, brothers, parents, professors. She got high literary honors at Smith college in the forties, where she studied under top English teachers. She published briefly in the major journals in her twenties. Top literary agents went after her. Instead of writing, she married and bred children; and fussed and fussed and fussed over them. Once a year - at Christmas - she delivered a piece for National Review. It aways arrived - but only after threats, cajolery, and blackmail. But what did come - stories of her family, and their encounters with the modern world - were the most popular yearly feature of the magazine. Her sudden death came as a personal shock to thousands of people who believed that anyone who combined her humor, her poignancy, her surpassing knowledge of little children was, or certainly deserved to be, immortal. This volume is a collection of most of her published work, and most of what she wrote and never submitted to a publisher. The impact of her work on the quiet people is imperishable. The impact of this book on the scanners who view the American literary scene in search of imperishable talent is likely to be the same. From William F. Buckley, "Will Mrs. Major Go to Hell? is offered by the publishers as the owrk of a major American humorist whose self-effacement should not stand in the way of her achievement."
