The Great War has entered its second year drawing Europe into a conflict that shows no sign of ending. The Western Front has become a brutal stalemate compelling the allied forces to prepare another vast assault to expel the German invaders.
Four young Parisians are forced to deal with stark new realities created by the war. They are subsequently drawn into the upper levels of the military bureaus, the hierarchy of the church and the wards of a specialized hospital for those maimed in battle. Their travels lead them across France to banks in Switzerland and even to the very battlefields themselves.
As the year proceeds, buoyed by recovery, faith and dedication, they confront many complex challenges. Their efforts draw them closer together, allowing them to regain some measure of normalcy in their lives despite the stark realities the war has created. Then everything is complicated by a German assault on the French town of Verdun producing death and destruction on a scale never imagined.
Wilderness of Folly continues the sweeping narrative of the Folly series portraying the Great War through the eyes of those forced to endure it. It is a story of resilience, faith, transformation and struggle necessitated by the need to escape a seemingly endless dark wilderness spawned by folly. It is also a paean to the human spirit which compels some to persist and ultimately to triumph.
