The Definitive Work on Shipwrecks of northern Wisconsin
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 15 years ago
PJ Creviere was the president of the Wisconsin Underwater Archeology Association when he published his extensive research into the shipwrecks of northern Wisconsin....roughly from Marinette to Two Rivers. This is a thick and extensive book that details nearly every commercial vessel ever lost in the area covered. Several hundred wrecks are reviewed, along with primary reference material for each. The book is the only comprehensive reference for wrecks of the area....no similar study having been attempted before or since. The author also includes some excellent articles about the maritime lore and legends of northern Lake Michigan, including Lasalle's Griffon, the Poverty Island Treasure and several other interesting topics. I own the book both in soft and hard-cover, and I frequently consult it. I have found a handful of errors and omissions when comparing the book with my original research, but this is to be expected in an area as broad and esoteric as Wisconsin shipwrecks. If you have any interest in the maritime history of this area, Wild Gales is a must have. It also makes an excellent bathroom reader. Unfortunately, the book is out of print, but copies are still available from many outlets.
