In the 1860's, everything was rough for both the white people and the Indians. There was the brutal civil war for the white people and Indian battles between Indian tribes as well as with the white people. This story tells of a well-meaning man who experienced all of this from Anderson Prison in Georgia to San Francisco by the means of transportation at the time, which for him was for the most part horseback. Starting in the military academy, he had no idea what final occupation was in store for him. He became known across the United States, and was embarrassed by it. On most of this journey, he was accompanied by a white teenage boy who had a reputation of having lived with the Apache for years. Having absolutely nothing in common, they became partners.
