Wickenburg, Arizona was founded in 1863 along the Hassayampa River by gold miner Henry Wickenburg, along with other miners, prospectors, ranchers, and farmers. The site had previously been occupied by small bands of Indians. The new town was without an actual jailhouse until 1890. A sturdy mesquite tree with the addition of iron shackles served as a town jail for holding prisoners during those early years. During that period a lot of outlaws had time to think about their crimes while chained to the old tree. The story goes that no one ever managed to escape. The outlaw known at Will Sutton had begun his ten year career as a murderer and robber after deserting from Camp Date Creek, Arizona Territory. During those wild years he had committed many crimes. After his capture by a deputy U.S. marshal he found himself chained to the infamous jail tree in Wickenburg, Arizona Territory.Note: This is more of a booklet than an actual book. The idea was to have a quick, fun read (with some local history and geography thrown in) that visitors or tourists could read while visiting the Jail Tree or having lunch at a downtown caf?.
