After psychologist Bill Taggart begins working at the Maybrook Psychiatric Facility, it becomes apparent that what he learned in graduate school has ill-prepared him for the extraordinary cases that await him. His dysfunctional childhood and an estranged relationship with his troubled brother complicate his effectiveness as a clinician.

When Bill crosses paths with Chuck, a war veteran many years his senior, a friendship blossoms out of their shared, if different, experience with loss.
