A National Guard division, the 32nd "Red Arrow" Division, made up of men from Michigan and Wisconsin, was called to active duty in October 1940. The Division was transported to Australia in the spring of 1942 and became the first U.S. Army unit to face combat when sent to New Guinea in September of that year. How and why American forces had to fight in the "Green Hell" of New Guinea is answered in the book.
