The "whimsical birds" for which NANCY TOPPING BAZIN is now known, began as part of a mysterious, unconscious, creative process. Birds began to appear in her paintings. She never banished them, because they were perfectly harmonious with her instinctive love of color, line, and pattern. Now she starts with a realistic drawing of each one and carefully plans her composition; then she turns them over to her imagination. She seeks to capture the whimsical essence of each bird and feels free to alter their colors, patterns, and expressions. She wants her art to be, not realistic, but "playful."
