School is never out when you are a manager

I've known Lonnie for several years and it was to my great pleasure that he asked me to read and review this book. Ironically, I read this book cover to cover on a flight to California when I was going to a workshop that a colleague and I were putting on for prospective managers. The book encapsulates what it takes to be a leader and manager in a very concise way. The entire book takes less than an hour to read but packs an enormous amount of management and leadership wisdom in less than 100 pages. I can personally identify with Lesson 10: Smarts - Direction = Absent Minded Professor. I'm currently well into my second attempt at being a manager within my company. My first experience was so miserable, I swore I would never attempt it again and I went several years before I embraced management a second time What I eventually learned on my own and Lonnie succinctly describes is the role of mentors in successful leadership. If I had this book my first time as a manager, I would have sought out good mentors and would likely have been successful. The book doesn't spell out detailed plans for improvement, but readily identifies traits that good leaders exhibit to effectively manage their teams. This book is both an excellent primer for new and prospective managers, but can serve as a good reminder to those managers who need a refresher. Chuck Suter
