Why Does Daddy Use Wheels?: A Father and Son Story About Wheelchairs, Differences, and Adventures Together

By Valeria Hernández and Juan Hernández

"Daddy, why do you use wheels?"

It's morning at Luca's house, which means teeth to scrub, a little blue car to grab, and a great big hug waiting in Daddy's arms. But today, on the way out the door, Luca has a question.

Daddy's answer comes easy. "My legs work differently than yours, buddy." And the day rolls on: to the park with Luca riding on Daddy's lap, down the slide, into daydreams of pirates and rockets with Daddy right there in every one.

At the playground, Luca runs on fast little feet. Daddy rolls on fast big wheels. Both are fast in their own way.

Then at bedtime, Luca asks one more question. The kind only a child thinks to ask.

A story from a real family. Juan Hernandez has used a power wheelchair since a spinal cord injury in 2021. He and his wife Valeria wrote this book for their son Luca because they couldn't find one like it: a story where the wheelchair is not a problem to solve, just part of how Daddy goes. The last pages include photos of the real Daddy and Luca.
