Mary Ann is an average 7-year-old girl who was born in the rural south. She's a happy child. She loves her family very much. Her Mother (Momma), her father (Paw Paw), her Brother Hubert Lee (hubba lee) and her Sister Stella. She has a dog that she loves as well named Ol Shine. Her life is changed greatly when her father dies and her family moves from the only home, she has ever known to move in with family in a town far, far away. In the town she was born in everyone spoke the same way. However, in the new town everybody speaks differently than she does, and she begins to be teased for not talking right. She receives a great gift from a family friend in the form of an explanation. After which she realizes that different does not mean wrong.
