Someone has stolen the Baby Jesus, swaddling clothes and all, from the public Nativity Scene in the pious town of Hanover, and the residents are outraged. Kathleen MacGuffin, the disgraced Guardian Angel of the Nativity, bares the shame of losing the Holy Infant, while her neighbor, Marilyn Marley, secretly schemes to be the next Guardian Angel. Stanley Dunmovin, teenaged nerd, genius, and gadget freak, has set up a video camera to record any further thefts. His crush, Lizzie Green, the only Jewish girl in mostly Methodist Hanover, vows to be the one to catch the thief just to spite the town. Suspects abound. Suspicions and jealousies begin to divide the townspeople. There are break-ups and break-ins. No one is any closer to finding the real thief, and even the police are perplexed. The poor Baby Jesus may just have to save Himself. Who Stole the Baby Jesus? is a Christmas mystery that parodies the prejudices, traditions, and politics of a small Midwestern town.
