Pooch's master, Jackie, just never got around to naming the dog. Pooch was the name Jackie's mother tacked on the pup the day the boy discovered him in the woods in a box with two dead siblings. The pup was near death itself when Jackie carried it home. Between the boy and his mother the pup survived, and forever on shadowed Jackie wherever he went; when allowed. Their veterinarian surmised the red dog was a mix of an English bulldog and a German Sheppard, a formidable mix. Pooch topped out at eighty pounds of solid muscle two years later, and was extremely protective of the boy. This particular summer, several men learned how protective, and after a trip to the E.R. each threatened to shoot the dog. Ten year old Jackie and three older boys tacked together a raft and shoved off on the adventure of their life. Pooch would not to be left behind. Before sundown, as a storm approached, the three older boys jumped ship. Jackie and Pooch sailed on. Both soon abandoned the raft when it began to disintegrate during the storm. The dog becomes an unsung hero after Jackie is hit by lightning and lays the night partially submerged in the rising river. The crippled boy then has an unpleasant encounter with a hobo the next day.Jackie's mother and a deputy sheriff spend a week seeking him and the dog, as they trail them on their erratic trek through the woods along the river. The boy's worthless, absentee, womanizing, couldn't care less father's lot suffers after Jackie and Pooch make the noon TV news. Their raft was discovered downriver in a drift following the horrendous storm. Jackie's mother and the deputy sheriff, former high school sweethearts, realize the spark is still there.Pooch is shot.
