Behind the gates of Whitmore Estate, nothing is ever quite what it seems.

More than thirty years ago, after an afternoon watching cricket in Essex, I climbed back onto my motorbike and headed home.

But that afternoon, I took a different turn.

A quiet country lane led me towards Epping Forest, where I came across an elegant manor house standing beyond a set of imposing gates.

I stopped.

For a few moments, I simply sat there with my crash helmet removed, looking through those gates and wondering about the world that existed beyond them.

Then I rode away.

But somehow, that manor never quite left me.

Decades later, a fictional character named Charles offered his old friend Duggee Whitmore a rather interesting position - and suddenly that long-forgotten afternoon came rushing back.

The gates opened once again.

What began as a memory became Whitmore Estate: a world of mystery, friendship, temptation, humour, privilege, unexpected opportunity and secrets hidden behind closed doors.
