A Definitive Deer Biology Book

This is one of the most definitive books on the biology of white tail deer today. Written in 1984, it is definitely due for an update, but nonetheless it is an excellent reference on the biology and management of deer. It is used as a reference by many deer managers, college professors, undergraduate and graduate students, and people with a strong interest in deer. It is not the easiest reading, but much useful information on deer can be gleaned from it. When I was a graduate student in forestry we used in as the main reference for deer oriented projects. It goes in depth into the anatomy, physiology, and management of deer, with references to all over the country. I would recommend it to anyone trying to learn more than the average hunting book could teach you. It has an excellent section about the George Reserve in Michigan, where a lot of the foundation knowledge of deer population dynamics occured. If more people could read and grasp this section alone, we would have a lot less opposition to correctly managing deer populations.

A Serious Book for Serious White-Tailed Deer People

I break my deer books into two categories: reference(the Hall text) and "how to"(Grow 'Em Right) by Dougherty and Dougherty. The Doughertys tell you how to create great deer hunting with habitat and food plots while Hall tells you why you should have good habitat. Both books belong on the serious deer enthusiast's book shelf. Hall's book is a compilation of articles by some of the nation's leading deer experts. The chapters are both interesting and informative. They provide the necessary background you need to better understand the white-tailed deer,it's habitat and its behavior. It's a must own for professionals and serious lay persons alike.

This book is very thorough and written for the professional wildlife manager, yet would be useful to a White-tailed deer lover also.
