White Picket Fences: Behind every perfect fence is a story worth hiding
Paddock Close is the sort of quiet English street where nothing much happens - at least, that is what the four families who live there would like everyone to believe.
Four houses. Four gardens. One immaculate run of white picket fencing, lovingly painted every spring by Ted Buckley, the quiet neighbour who has spent thirty-one years listening without ever telling.
But the fences are beginning to fail.
Gerald Fenwick, a recently retired solicitor, is hiding a secret life as a bestselling romance novelist under a woman's name. His wife, Margaret, has secrets of her own. Across the close, other marriages, ambitions, betrayals and carefully protected truths are beginning to surface.
Then an anonymous note appears.
What follows is a summer in which the polite boundaries between neighbours begin to crumble - and the people behind them discover that keeping up appearances can only work for so long.
Warm, witty and quietly poignant, White Picket Fences is a story about secrets, marriage, friendship, grief and the strange, complicated lives that exist behind the most respectable doors.
Because a fence may keep things in.
But it cannot keep the truth out forever.
