Whispers of Eternity: Echoes From the Veil: A Compilation of Short Stories

It seems you've returned for more, and for that, I can only extend my deepest, most heartfelt sympathies. I'd ask whether you're a glutton for punishment or merely someone with exceedingly poor judgment, but frankly, I suspect the answer is both. You were here before, weren't you? You took your first tentative steps into a world of heroism and horror, of love and despair, of blood-soaked tragedy and grim inevitabilities. You saw what lurked in the shadows of Middar-the kind of things that make men pray louder and drink harder. And yet, here you are again.

I'd apologize for what's coming, but what would be the point? If you think my remorse changes anything, you're more foolish than I took you for. The world of Middar is no less cruel than when last we parted. If anything, it's worse. Rogles still festers in its own filth, the land of Olirich remains a fine place to lose your life (if you're lucky) or your soul (if you're not), and the sovereign state of Evroni continues to prove that sovereignty is a poor shield against the march of suffering.

Now, you might be thinking, That sounds familiar. Didn't you say something like this last time? To which I say, yes. And I'll say it again. And again. Because you need to understand that the weight of these stories is not something you can cast off like an old cloak. You will carry them, whether you wish to or not. They will settle in your bones, whisper in your ear when you least expect it, and, if you're particularly unfortunate, make you question why you ever cared in the first place.

But don't worry. I'll be here. I'll guide you through the horrors to come, a steady hand in the dark. You may clutch at it when the fear sets in, though I should warn you-I've got a terrible habit of letting go when things get truly dreadful.

Before we begin, though, I must confess something. A tiny, insignificant detail I may have... omitted.
