Whisper in the Wind

This is a story of love and war, of two hearts drawn together in the historical setting of World War II in the Philippines. It is also the story of their struggle for survival and how their Christian faith helps them endure the battle for Bataan, the infamous Bataan "death march," the "hell ships" and years of imprisonment in Japanese prisoner of war camps. Chaplain Lieutenant Charlie Martin and army nurse Rose Flynn are assigned to the Thirty-First Infantry Regiment. The two, young at heart, fall in love but are separated when the Japanese invade the Philippines and they are caught in the maelstrom of war. The Japanese defeat the Americans and force them to endure a 60-mile journey through the jungles to the Cabanatuan Prison Camp, a journey known as the "Bataan Death March." When Charlie sees hundreds in the camp dying for lack of medicine, he becomes a smuggler and, in league with the Filipino guerrillas and at the risk of his life, smuggles large amounts of medicines and food into the camp. Meanwhile, when Corregidor surrenders, Rose and the other nurses are sent to the Santo Tomas Prison camp in Manila where they fight for survival in the midst of sickness, disease and starvation. When Charlie and all the other officers in Cabanatuan are transferred to Japan on the infamous "hell ships," they are bombed by American pilots who do not know the prisoners are on board. Charlie is one of the few survivors but Rose is told he perished on the voyage. Charlie and the other prisoners who survived the bombings later are transported to Manchuria. American GIs liberate the nurses in Santo Tomas in February of 1945 and they return to the states where Rose meets and marries a Christian surgeon. Eight months later Charlie is liberated and returns home to learn that Rose is married. Although she believed him dead for three years, she is heartbroken. Their tearful reunion is an unforgettable climax to the four years of struggle and survival during the most turbulent days in American history.
