I became interested in the story of Humphrey E.D. Lloyd from a reference to him I'd found in a well-known stock trading text -- that Dr. Lloyd was not only a physician but also a well-known and much published stock trader. I find the stories of individuals who can master more than one difficult field interesting. When I first started reading Dr. Lloyd's memoir, I found it quite detailed and I wasn't sure I'd finish it. But I gave it a second chance and I was wonderfully rewarded! This is a very fine book, filled with great anecdotes and stories covering some 70 years in Britain and America. Dr. Lloyd's memory is truely amazing, and the reader learns much about not only his life, but the life and times in Britain and the United States during the period. Dr. Lloyd tells his story with an honesty and clarity that draws the reader in. Eventually, I couldn't put the book down as I wanted to see how his life unfolded. His relationship with his parents, how it contributed to his successes in life, as well as tragedies he also suffered -- the loss of a child, a divorce -- are poignantly told. I can't recommend the book more highly. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I have the pleasure of personally knowing Humphrey Lloyd. We have been friends since we met in the early 1980's as a result of a common interest in trading commodities. Some time ago he told me he was going to write his life's story and publish it in a book. It seemed like a big project and I wondered if anyone would really be interested. When the book was finished , he sent me a complimenary copy.WHAT A GREAT SURPRISE! Humphrey has an amazing ability to recall the smallest details of his life and present them in an interesting way. The story is a fascinating account of his life's journey starting as a child of privilege growing up in Wales during World War II. His account of teenage love is hilarious. After receiving a medical degree from Cambridge University, we follow Humphrey to New England where he becomes Head of Pathology at Beverly Hospital in Massachusetts. Eventually, we follow him into his retirement years in Texas.Humphry has a humorous upbeat writing style that can make you laugh and cry. As you read, you'll be amused, entertained, and inspired as you follow Humphrey and his family through an amazing journey of life. I found it a wonderful read and wished it could have lasted longer.Bob DennisEast Bridgewater, MA
An engrossing read

This outstanding book caught me completely by surprise. I approached it with some trepidation thinking that at nearly 500 pages it would be a long and tedious read. With that in mind, I began it in a speed reading fashion. But it wasn't long before the book took hold of me and I found myself immersed and hanging on every word. By its conclusion, I was wishing it was another 500 pages in length. While Memory Serves puts to rest the stereotypical view some of us have that the Brits are staid, boring, and a bit stuffy. Dr. Lloyd's life journey has been anything but. This is an autobiography of an intellectual dynamo who has seen it all and done it all and on two different continents. About the only downside to this book is you might find yourself reexamining your own life and wondering why it hasn't been as exiting, full, and diverse as Dr. Lloyd's.

I found the book beautifully written and a very interesting read. It was inspirational to read of someone who made the tough choices and through his staying on course enjoyed a wonderful life. Anyone reading While Memory Serves is sure to not only enjoy getting to know Humphrey and Mary but learn some fine lessons in a very entertaining manner.Frank Boynton
