Where They Live Japan

By Paul Barbera

Step inside a world rarely seen. This beautifully observed book opens the doors to private homes across Japan, offering an intimate portrait of how creative people live. Featuring artists, architects, designers, and makers, it invites readers into the spaces where ideas are formed, routines unfold, and creativity takes shape in everyday life.

From compact Tokyo apartments overflowing with personal details and Kyoto machiya shaped by centuries-old traditions to inventive live/ work studios and unique family homes on the edges of the city, the homes captured in Where They Live Japan embody the breadth of contemporary Japanese domestic life. Not styled for show, these environments are lived-in, thoughtful, and deeply personal. Through candid photography and insightful profiles, each chapter tells a story, revealing how the home is shaped by craft, constraint, and habit, and how everyday rituals become design solutions.

More than a book about interiors, Where They Live Japan is a colorful portrait of contemporary Japanese life, seen through the spaces people inhabit.
