French Ancestors

In May we are visiting Quebec to trace the origins of my husband's ancestors who arrived in early 1600's. This book is makes the places and historical facts come to life.

Where the River Narrows Captivates the Mind and Heart

The author threads the rich history of Quebec into her story with expertise and accuracy. Her writing captivates the mind and the heart, providing a glimpse of life in a magical and unique place called Quebec. That said, Where the River Narrows can be disorganized with the narrative jumping back and forth in time. There are so many characters it can be confusing. Before you start reading, look for the family tree at the beginning of the book, you'll need to flip back to it periodically to keep some of the less prominent characters straight. It was not until I was close to the end of the book that I discovered the family tree. I will definitely re-read this fascinating book with family tree in hand. I certainly hope this isn't the author's last work on Quebec.

Dynasty of strong women in Quebec

This is a lyrical telling of the stories of the strong women of the Trembley family in Northern Quebec, centered on the matriarch Marie-Reine, her attachment to her elusive coureur de bois father, marriage and lives of her children. The inhospitable environment of Northern Quebec breeds tough and interesting characters, the stories of whom are interwoven with some history of Quebec and beautiful evocations of the province itself. Tied in is the current life of the author and her dissolving marriage, and pain during the death of her mother, one of the strong Quebecoises descended from Marie-Reine. If you enjoy the novels of Amy Tan, you will love this book. It has a similar multigeneration approach, with real insight into the hearts of persons who have been shaped by harsh outside events. I am anxious to read Ms. Laberge's second book!
