maybe the most useful book I've ever owned

I have eaten at about 200 of the restuarants in this book and with the exception of one they were dead on. I wish an updated version would be published. Some of the listings are closed.

where the locals eat

only book to take on the road for restaurants

This book answers the question I've asked in all my travels.

Having lived in a number of cities, I find the recommendations given to be consistent with my own research. I've used the book in Seattle, Detroit, Nashville, New Orleans, Atlanta, New York City and LA (Lower Alabama), and it hasn't steered me wrong yet

At last, a good restaurant guide for the rest of us!

Take it from a well-traveled glutton: This book does a fine job of filling the huge gap between the Michelin and Mobil Guides and the yellow pages. It offers the best choices in a variety of categories not only for the big cities, but for the real-life destinations where we need the most help finding something good to eat. Want good pizza in Knoxville or Chinese in Peoria? _Where the Locals Eat_ takes you to the best in town. It also serves as a great starting point for one of my favorite pastimes -- comparing notes with friends on memorable meals on the road. Unless you're anorexic or willing to settle for yet another Big Mac, don't leave home without it

Along with my atlas, this goes with me everywhere!

We travel frequently. On our recent Florida excursion, we found the listings in Where the Locals eat extremely helpful. Since that trip we have bought copies for several of our friends, who report that it is as useful to us as it is to them. I'll never have to settle for fast food on the road again just because I want something I can trust. There are very few places I've been that Where the Locals Eat doesn't cover. Anyone who travels a lot, especially by automobile, should have this book next to the atlas, the cassette tapes and the band-aids! I can no longer imagine traveling anywhere without this book. Recently on one of the rec.travel newsgroups there was a thread concerning the search for the best German restaurants in Milwaukee. Of the four whose names consistently came up in the discussion, three were listed in Where the Locals Eat under Best German Food. I haven't missed yet by following the recommendations in this book. And it's not just expensive or specialty food either. A hamburger in Tallahassee, seafood in Savannah, barbecue in Birmingham, you name it, it's in there. And it fits neatly in my briefcase too!
