You Will Find Him When...

How often do you hear people inquire, "Where is God?" or have you been the one asking the question? Dr. John Townsend shares through Scripture that it is ok to question, to wonder and get honest with God in his book "Where is God?" Often this question births out of doubt. How we perceive God lends to this doubt. Is he active or disengaged in our struggles? Is he waiting for us to mess up? Does he sit back and indulge our every whim, laughing at our cute behavior? Whatever the perception, our confidence in approaching God, or the extent of our honesty with Him are determined. Will we feel be honest with Him and seek help. Often-times our perception is mapped out through significant relationships in our life--past or present. Mr. Townsend, offers us the freedom, as laid out in Scripture, to open our hearts and make ourselves vulnerable before God and our fellow Christians. God sees us, and our hearts anyway, why lie to Him? Throughout each chapter, Mr. Townsend directs us to the Bible to show that God is indeed involved in our struggles as well as our triumphs. The answer comes from Him at just the right moment and always is for our good and not our harm. Sometimes, God must actively hold us tightly in order to keep us from thrashing about in our agony and hurt others--but He is involved. This book from beginning to end, exposes the loving, faithful, truth-telling God who cared enough to send us His Word, his Son, and His Spirit. We are encouraged--admonished--to connect with Him, commune with Him, and accept that He is God and we are not. Part of that connecting involves relationship on a horizontal, as well as vertical, level. It is well worth the time taken to read, digest, and allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you through Mr. Townsend's teaching. Allow the words of this book to intertwine with your spirit and soul. Perhaps you'll find the answers you've been looking for. (While this was a gift from Thomas Nelson Publishers, it is their express wishes that all reviews be honest and fair.)

Where is God?

In our darkest hours we cry out to God "Where are you?" It often doesn't matter how close our relationship has been, in those days of heartache, we don't always see His work or feel His presence. Having lived in that darkness, I am drawn to books that offer help for the suffering Christian. There are only a handful of books written for struggling or suffering Christians that I recommend. This book, Where is God? by Dr. John Townsend, is one I will highly recommend. Spiritual pain is often worse than physical pain. Dr. Townsend understands the intensity of the problem and gives solid scriptural counsel. He offers hope and understanding without condemnation for the suffering Christian. His scripture based message is one that makes sure the reader understands who God is and how He stays with us even when we don't feel His presence. Dr. Townsend explains that we often have a distorted view of God and it is those views that often cause us to struggle with matters of faith. I think this was the most interesting part of the book and reminds us not to try to make God fit into our own images of Him. This is a book I would recommend for those going through trying times, for church libraries, for anyone that offers counsel, or is interested in Christian psychology.

Priceless Life Skills!

The ability to find God in all situations whether pleasant or disastrous can make all the difference not only in your spiritual life but in your physical, emotional and mental wellbeing. This book will give you priceless advice that will allow you to do just that! I definitely recommend this book and I urge you not to give up when it seems like it is starting out a little slow. "Where Is God?" was another one of those books that just jumped out at me. Who hasn't asked themselves this question at one time or another? This book took a little effort to get into but boy was it worth it! I think the groundwork that Dr. Townsend lays in the first chapters really is the fertilizer that makes the rest of the book bloom for you. This book is full of relatable stories and will catch you off guard by providing some powerful food for thought. For me personally, the ideas of the distorted images we have of God provided surprising hours of reflection.

great Book!

I am doing these book reviews to expand my husbands library. He is almost out of school for Marriage and Family Therapy. This go around I chose Dr. John Townsends book, Where Is God? Dr. Townsend is known for writing several other great books like; Boundaries, Who's Pushing Your Buttons?, and It's Not My Fault. After personally reading a few of his other books it was no surprise to me how much I liked this one. Who hasn't been at a point in their life where they felt abandoned by God? Or wondered why he had yet to show up in a bad situation in our lives? I'll be completely honest, I have found myself there on more than one occasion. (Lately) This book give clear and scriptural answers to these questions. If you have found yourself asking this or know someone that is this is a book I would highly recommend.
