If you are in the mood for introspection--this is the book for you. Janice Deaner is a master of arousing your curiosity. In both "Where Blue Begins" and "The Body Spoken" the narrator tells you bits and pieces as the story unfolds. In each you have no idea where the story is headed. It is only by continuing your reading quest that your curiosity becomes sated. She makes you wonder why you read her books because you learn about your need for suspense, your desire to know the characters, as if some part of your very own Jungian shadow will be revealed. And just as you are curious to know the outcome of the mystery that the protagonist Maggie discovers, you will wonder how you will have been changed by the very reading of Janice's work. Looking forward to the next Deaner discovery.
A literarary promise fulfilled

I was privileged to know this young writer in New Orleans when she was just beginning her struggle to write her first novel in the early 80's. What a joy it was to see the fruits of her toil and how far she has progressed as a writer. Where Blue Begins is a literary promise fulfilled, which I thoroughly enjoyed reading. I look forward to even greater works from Janice Deaner in the future.
It lingers in my mind.

I found this book in a used book store. Then it sat on my shelf for quite some time. When I finally read it I was enthralled by the story. I keep looking for other books by this author - no luck so far. I gave the book to a friend but now I wish I had kept it to savor again. What a story! I loved it!
A stunning story of a family and its shattered dreams...

The words "gripping" and "mesmerizing" are overused a lot these days, but they can't begin to capture how truly amazing this book is. I was doubtful when a friend gave me the book, because the edition I have has a cheesy Harlequin romance-type cover, but I took the plunge and started reading -- truly proving you can't judge a book by its cover!! I couldn't sleep at night, I wanted to keep reading, and I've never had a book affect me the way the ending of this book does -- when the reader and the protagonist simultaneously learn the family's biggest secrets -- I was trembling and sobbing along with the characters. One of the topics in the book is jazz, and the book is structurally similar to a jazz composition... a riff that pulls you in, keeps you moving along, and builds to a mesmerizing crescendo, but knows not to just stop there and eases back to the starting riff, depositing an exhausted and satiated reader back in reality
brilliant
