From the Prologue of "When You Are Making Other Plans":As I recalled the stories of my life in order to share them with my family, the following sentence came to mind and seemed to be an appropriate title for the collection."Life is what happens when you are making other plans."This is one of those catchy little sentences that sticks in your mind because it contains two important elements: truth and humor. The humor is immediately evident when you first hear this sentence, but the truth becomes more evident as you accumulate years. It may also have special appeal to those who have a tendency toward planning, as I do. To those like me, planning has great appeal as a way to accomplish goals, and it is useful in that way. But as planners see so many plans upended by the unforeseen events of life, the little sentence jumps out of the recesses of our mind to remind us of how life really works. And eventually the trick becomes learning how to enjoy it, capitalize on it, and make the best of what comes your way.What does all of that have to do with my collection of stories?The stories of my life were enjoyable and meaningful to write and reminded me of how often the really big stuff, and sometimes just really interesting stuff, in my life came about because of unforeseen events that were not in my plans and were not predictable.Why write stories about my life?It's just a life. Everyone reading this has one. For me, there is a desire to share the details of my life with those who carry my genes forward and others who have been so important to me along the way. We all want to be known by those we care about, but I think they often think of us as who we are today. These stories are an attempt to show how I got to today, for better or for worse.
