I read this book several years ago when I was in 5th or 6th grade; it is about a lonley girl trying to fit in, her mom is absent all the time and somehow the girl ends up befriending this sweet and also untolerably lonley little old lady. She visits her all the time and seems like a bright, thoughtful child, and this little old lady tries so hard even tho she is very poor. The girl ends up making a couple friends her own age and, well, I won't spoil the end, but this is the only book I ever threw across the room, I felt flabbergasted and betrayed and disgusted, even tho later on I realized she probably had made a reasonable descision- it's the way she did what she did that bothers me to this day (tho it seems quite tame and subtle by today's standards).
