Kelsey Barrett is bored with her desk job in cyber security at her father's firm in Atlanta. She needs a new purpose. This job is her second career change in three years, but it's not as though she likes changing jobs. As a Lieutenant in the army, Kelsey barely survived an enemy attack while on a secret mission in Afghanistan. Several of her fellow soldiers were killed. With the failed mission on her record, Kelsey and the army mutually parted ways when her commitment ended.

Kelsey cajoles her father into sending her to assist an over worked county sheriff in the mountains of North Carolina. It's a small government surveillance contract, but Kelsey feels useful again. The parents of two local teens insist their daughters are being held hostage by a secretive group that recently set up camp on Love Vine Mountain. The daughters deny they were coerced to join the cult. As they work together to learn the truth, Kelsey and the sheriff find they have more in common than either suspected when she arrived in Mason Valley.

As Kelsey scales the rocky cliffs and the thickets on the mountain, the soothing echoes of the mourning dove calm her turbulent memories of the Afghan war. But could Kelsey's newly found peace be more about the sheriff who hired her than the mountain she must climb, or the case itself?
