When The Moses Came Again

In When The Moses Came Again, Jay Lawrence Sugerman does the unthinkable: He transforms the Book of Exodus into a science fiction novel set in 3051 in an analogous but very different universe. In doing so, he frees Moses from his imprisonment in indelible biblical scrolls and rigid historical context and allows him to be a three-dimensional contemporary figure in a complex modern world where God no longer directs his actions. This riveting, fast-moving novel unwinds a provocative tale of the enslavement of the peaceful inhabitants of a planet by technologically advanced but atheist invaders. The tall, blond Brindon are a genetically-enhanced species. Their home planet, Brindon-4, is proud to be ruled by the Central Computer, their ultimate, impartial authority that never makes a mistake. The colony they have established on this distant world lives in a controlled and unchanging environment beneath the impenetrable shield of an immense, ten-inch-thick dome of programmed energy. The Brindon dismiss the small tribe of short, dark, primitive humanoids on their new possession as "savs." Forced to labor long hours in blistering-hot desert fields under brutal Brindon supervisors, half of the savs have already died.Krill is the twenty-one-year-old grandson of the magistrate of the new colony. Shunned and bullied because he looks too much like a sav, he is a defiant computer programmer with an explosive temper. His rage at a supervisor he sees viciously beating a defenseless sav leads to a confrontation with the man and Krill killing him. Fearful of the justice he would receive, Krill accepts the help of a mysterious sav and flees into the desert. He is led to the home village of the savs in the lush forests of the distant mountains, where the remnants of their tribe struggle to remain free. But theirs is a strange society guided by unusual rituals and unexpected rules, a stone-age world dominated by its females. Not only are females the sexually aggressive gender, but they are also their tribal leaders and their soldiers. A few of those in the mountains see Krill as the Moses, the powerful leader prophesied to come and save them when they are threatened with disaster. Krill is sure an atheist like himself would never be chosen for that role, and the catastrophes that quickly befall him only support that contention. But, even as Krill begins to confront some of the disturbing flaws in his new home, it becomes clear that time is quickly running out for the savs. This thought-provoking novel explores the making of a great leader. But it views its subject not as a nearly mythical figure that can only be glimpsed at a distance, but as a flawed and tentative human being on whom every wart can be inspected. Readers are rewarded with front-row seats from which to watch as Krill wrestles with himself, the deceptive and treacherous worlds in which he is thrust, and the disasters he encounters at every turn-letting them witness the forging of Krill's character and his emergence as a profound but truly humble leader.
