maturity. Though their subject matter is varied, they all reveal
the sharp, distanced vision of an outsider. It is the tone of
someone who has been away for long, and then returned to be
enriched by the presence of several worlds in his head.

From The Author:

Most of the stories in the collection "When the Azaleas are
gone" were written between 1969 and 1985 when I was a
teacher in Halifax County - Bedford District, Nova Scotia,
Canada. In some of the stories I have felt more comfortable
using first person as the story teller. These varied characters
have no semblance to me as a person. In one such case the first
person, I, is an uneducated person, in another, the first person
makes a living as a writer. The stories and the characters are
pure fiction.
