When the Air Changes: A Whippoorwill Novel

By Sydney Skyler

Some places ask you to become who you've always been.
Whippoorwill asks Alyssa to decide who she wants to become next.

Alyssa has spent years holding her hometown together.

She organizes the traditions, solves the problems, protects the things everyone else depends on, and quietly carries the weight of expectations that feel older than memory itself. She has always believed that loving a place means keeping it exactly as it has always been.

Then Nic arrives.

Calm where Alyssa is cautious. Curious where Alyssa seeks certainty. Nic doesn't challenge Whippoorwill's traditions-she simply asks whether they still serve the people they're meant to serve.

When unexpected budget cuts force the town's beloved annual festival to change, Alyssa finds herself confronting more than impossible logistics. Every decision forces her to question the stories she's inherited about responsibility, loyalty, and what it truly means to preserve something worth loving.

As friendship grows into something deeper, Alyssa begins to discover that change is not always the opposite of belonging. Sometimes it is simply another way of caring.

When the Air Changes is a warm, thoughtful sapphic small-town romance about legacy, reinvention, community, and the quiet courage required to choose a future that honors the past without being trapped by it.
