The Author "IS" Batistine!

Treska Lindsey wrote this book for her daughter Toone. The drawing of Batistine looks like Toone when she was six years old. I had the pleasure of meeting Treska and her family when her son employed me. I worked for the family for over six years. She grew up in Europe and lived the life she described in her book. She was schooled at home with eleven brothers and sisters. Her husband, sons, and daughter moved to North Carolina to help her brother who had a canning business. One of her sons invented the now famous rice cake, which they sold to Quaker Mills. Soon after selling the rice cake business, they bought an old run down camp. They started the first Organic Garden in the area. I think it was the first in the state of North Carolina. Which eventually turned into a blueprint and teaching facility for others to learn about organic foods and gardening. After four years, they opened a restaurant and a resort. The place is known as Highland Lake Resort. Wellness, organic foods and their preparation, health, yoga, and personal development were their vision and mission. They did not stop there. The family designed and built a small "Green" community. They still have the organic gardens, farm, and community that teach about "Green Living." Now, that's intrepid!

Intrepid (super-brave)

"When Batistine Made Bread" is charming as it educates both in the great processes that must happen to put a loaf of bread on the table, and also in the great power of a willing heart. It instills new courage for tasks, either mundane or difficult. I discovered this book when my firstborn was six years old. Like Batistine, my Elizabeth was intrepid, and we loved this book. Though that six-year-old is now 21, I must order this book to read to "all" my children, and have on hand for my grandchildren. Find it while you still can. Its relative obscurity is a puzzle to me. In my mind, it rates as "forever classic."
