Wheels Within Wheels

Wheels Within Wheels is a short biblical reflection on one of the most remarkable visions in the Old Testament.

Based on Ezekiel 1, this booklet considers the prophet's vision of the glory of the Lord by the River Chebar. Ezekiel was among the captives in exile when the heavens were opened and he saw visions of God. What follows is strange, solemn, and glorious: living creatures with four faces and four wings, wheels on the earth beside them, rims full of eyes, movement without turning, a throne like sapphire, and above it all, the appearance of the likeness of the glory of the Lord.

At the centre of this reflection is the memorable phrase, "a wheel in the middle of a wheel." These words have often stirred curiosity, but Ezekiel's vision was not given as a puzzle to decode or as ancient machinery to explain. It was given to reveal the majesty, movement, holiness, and sovereign glory of God.

With a sober and worshipful tone, Wheels Within Wheels walks through the vision step by step. It considers the setting of exile, the opened heavens, the living creatures, the wheels, the colour of beryl, the rims full of eyes, the spirit in the wheels, and the throne above the firmament.

The central message is clear: God's glory is not confined.

His presence is not confined by place, exile, suffering, human expectation, or the limits of our understanding. Ezekiel was far from Jerusalem, yet the Lord's glory reached him there. His throne was not displaced by the displacement of His people. His rule was not weakened by Babylon. His word still came with authority.

This booklet invites readers to approach Ezekiel 1 with humility, reverence, and hope. It points beyond the wheels to the God who reigns above them, and beyond the vision to Christ, in whom the glory of God has come near in grace and truth.

Wheels Within Wheels is a call to read Scripture carefully, avoid empty speculation, trust the God whose ways are wiser than our sight, and worship the Lord whose glory is not confined.
