What's the Rule?
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
"Where can I find a clearly written handbook of basic grammar?" I hear this question frequently from university students who ask me to edit their theses and dissertations. At last, it excites me to respond: Kathy Sole's What's the Rule. This unique manual has three major sections: Punctuation, Grammar, and Sentences and Style and lists a series of clearly written grammar rules followed by explicit illustrations. Chapter layout makes it easy to locate relevant material, and the Glossary and Index are extremely useful. The rules are color-coded, and variations of fonts help to quickly identify an example of the convention the reader may be seeking. At the same time, I appreciate the straight-forward language as well as the several DOs and DO NOTs among the rules. I have edited technical papers for over two decades. You'd be surprised by the erratic punctuation and word usage I see as an editor. Creativity may be welcome in an illustrative story but not in formal writing. Kathy Sole's What's the Rule is a great resource for students as well as skilled writers, so I have encouraged each new client to purchase a copy of her easy-to-follow and informative handbook. In the long run, it will make my work go faster.Judith Binder Albuquerque, New Mexico
A Great Guide to English Usage
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
What's the Rule? fills the need of business people to quickly answer everyday English usage questions, without wading through more expansive guides. Kathy has done the "wading" for you, checking each of nearly 300 rules against over 30 writing texts, style guides, and reference books to ensure completeness and to determine the consistency of rules among experts in the field.I was attracted to the Confused Words section (Grammar), differentiating between well over a hundred sets of commonly confused words such as affect and effect, imply and infer, lay and lie, set and sit, and who and whom. Other special features include lists of Roman numerals, and common prefixes and suffixes. What's the Rule? is designed to be used.R. An Indispensable Desk Reference
Published by Thriftbooks.com User , 25 years ago
Here is a reference book that is easy to use. It is spiral bound with tabbed sections covering rules of punctuation, grammar and style plus a glossary and index. As and author and a publisher, I like the design, two-color printing and clear layout. Kathy Sole proves that a high-content book can be made even more useful with good design. Kathy Sole became motivated to develop this book as a result of her experience teaching community college writing courses and corporate writing workshops. Her students kept requesting a reference to the rules of English that was quickly accessible and written in understandable language. She fulfilled their requests. As an author of 113 books (including revisions and foreign-language editions) and over 500 magazine articles, I recommend this book to anyone who works with words. DanPoynter@ParaPublishing.com.
