Whatever Happened to the Late Great Planet Earth: A Layman's Perspective of Eschatology

Few subjects have been so divisive within the Church in general (and theological discourse in specific) than the subject of eschatology. While few people will know what the term eschatology means, most everyone has some opinion regarding future events relating to what is known in Christian parlance as "end times." Everyone lives his or her life with an eye to the future, or what you believe about it. What you believe about it affects your life. Most would agree that your eschatology has consequences. Eschatology matters. Speculation about the "certainty" of the "impending" end times is not new, but dates back centuries. Given the fact that all of the speculation, over such a long period of time, has been unfulfilled, inaccurate, repetitive, and unfounded, why do people, especially Christians continue to indulge in it?Whatever did happen to the "late great planet earth?" The one sure thing that stands in the face of conjecture relating to end times is continuance of human history. Those who continue to speculate as to the timing of the rapture and the Second Coming of Christ can join the rather large club of false prophets who for one reason or another believe that they have an inspired understanding of Biblical prophecy. It seems therefore that a more important question is "how then are we to live?"
