"Choosing Counsel For Your Problem, Personality & Pocketbook"

"What Your Lawyer Doesn't Want You To Know," Douglas Eikermann, NY, Self-Counsel Press Inc., 2002 ISBN: 1-55180-406-9, PC, 148 pgs., (4 pg. Contents, 3 pg. Intro.), 9" x 6" Eikermann, JD, LLM & Grad. US Naval Academy is corporate consultant for enterprises in Latin America & composed in simple prose, layman's terms, on what may be called the 3 P's: Choosing the right lawyer for your Problem, Personality & Pocketbook (or Purse). The book's 4 major Parts cover: I- Finding (selecting) a lawyer, II- Controlling a lawyer & minimize fee abuses, etc. III- Firing a lawyer, & IV- Alternative Dispute Resolutions (ADRs). Sub-sections nicely cover principal law specialties including Criminal-defense, Real Estate, PI, Traffic, Gen-Practice, Divorce & Family Law. Author underscores securing written contracts, clarification of fees, maintaining frequent contact with attorney & the spectacle of jury trial. He gives spin on legal & ethical malpractice, use of ADRs & roles lawyers should not play. Attention is given to indecorous roles, decisions & postures assumed by some (too many) judges, the latter who must pacify constituents & big money for re-election & re-appointment & so avoid unfavorable decisions. The book is a wealth of information on contacting & contracting a good lawyer, setting a fee structure & heeding warnings to avoid unneccessary legal expenses too frequently encountered, most commonly occuring when fees are "hourly" & a 15-sec. phone call is billed as 15-min. or perhaps $150. It appears (to me) unrealistic to "control" your lawyer in the manner Eikermann suggests, but perhaps that is unique to Latin America. Highly recommended reading - the book's title is provocative.

This book gave me great inside information

Great inside info....I read Mr. Eikermann's book and was delighted at how easy it was to read and how helpful it was. I found it to be highly practical, to the point, and written in such a way that I came away with a much deeper understanding of how the law works. The book was extremely helpful to me. I recommend it to everyone who is looking to hire a lawyer. You come away feeling like you just had a long conversation with someone who really knows the inside stuff about how to hire and handle a lawyer.I found the book gave me great info that I can use for both my business and in my private life. The info in the first chapter alone is easily worth the price of the book.
