What We Carried: Fragments and Memories from the Cradle of Civilization

"What We Carried" is a collaborative photo project by Jim Lommasson, with writing by Iraqi and Syrian refugees in America. The result is a book and traveling exhibit that gives voice to the plight of refugees, not only today but throughout time. Each participant shared an item with Lomasson that they brought with them on their journey to the United States. He photographed each object and returned a print to the owner, who wrote a personal reflection directly on the photograph. Viewing the exhibit, it's hard not to imagine what you would take if forced to flee home.
