What the Storyteller brings is fascinating.

What the Storyteller Brings by Robyn Demby is a creative blend of characters and emotions. The beginning chapters are fast paced with enough action to keep you well interested. I found the stories within stories immaculate in description and importance but towards the end I did feel discombobulated. The lines between plausibility and necessary plot points were a bit blurred. Still, an all out entertaining read. Go ahead indulge this is an up-in-comer I assure you. Good job, Robyn!

What the Storyteller Brings

In all fairness, I am being generous with four stars. But I'm going to try to explain everything as best I can. This is the second book of this kind that I've read. And by this kind, I mean one without professional editing. Compared to that first book (which I only read because it was written by a girl from my high school) this book was the most flawless piece of literature known to mankind. But compared to the many, many books I have read inbetween them, this book was very flawed. Taken from a previous review: "This book would have benefited from professional editing for flow, content and accuracy." Which explains it better than I could have. Now, don't get me wrong. It wasn't a bad book, by any means. The story itself was unique, which intrigued me from the beginning. However, parts of it were long, overdone, and kind of boring, which could have been prevented. In the beginning it was a very slow start... I couldn't get into the first part of the story as much as I could get into the second part... except by the end I was completely hooked like I would be any other book, which is quite possibly why I gave it four stars. In the middle I was contemplating putting it back on my shelf and keeping it as a backup book, or just coming back to it later, but I'm glad that I kept going, because at the end it took a surprising twist for good. I can honestly say that I'm looking forward to what Robyn Demby does next. =D

Scary stories around the fire are nothing new, but what if it was more than that?

Scary stories around the fire are nothing new, but what if it was more than that? In the novel "What the Storyteller Brings", Rosaline gathers her girlfriends every week for chit chat and a story. She uses her friends and people she knows as real characters in her stories, just for kicks. She tells a story of suspense about a kidnapper... but then it starts to become true. Can Rosaline give her story a happy ending before it becomes a real life tragedy? "What the Storyteller Brings" is a gripping suspense, sure to please young adult readers.

Living fiction

It begins innocently. Four tenth grade girls Just hanging out On a Tuesday evening Listening to stories Told by "The Storyteller", Rosaline Rosaline tells a lively tale Of kidnappers And cults, And the story includes her friends And other real-life characters Such as her crush, Jimmy Somehow, the zones get crossed And soon fiction starts becoming Reality And things get deadly serious And the only way out Is through the Stories Her friends beg her to stop But she just can't control her Addiction And soon a new story begins With a fresh audience Of the new kid in town Edmund In this second phase Things get a lot weirder And the novel takes an inexplicable leap With an unlikely science project A marriage and a medieval tale And she's STILL using real people, like Silver Imaginative, and vividly descriptive The story draws the reader in, Wondering what could possibly come next, But some "iffy" dialogue And a couple of errors here and here Detract somewhat from the telling A really exciting premise With realistic main characters In the four girls But rest is a bit of a stretch And some professional editing Wouldn't have hurt a bit Either 3.5 stars Amanda Richards, July 7, 2008

High school sophomore Rosaline is known by her friends as "the storyteller" for the fantastic tales she spins every Tuesday night in their company. She uses people she knows in her stories, whether they be her close group of friends or the rich girls who bully her at school or the boy she's secretly admired for years. The stories start as her way of getting away from a school life where she's not one of the popular girls and no one but her friends will notice her, but things take a turn for the worse when the things she talks about in her stories begin to cross over into real life. Rosaline begins to tell a tale in which her friends and enemies from school are all kidnapped by strange masked men and carried off into the woods. What starts as an overlooked coincidence, in which one of the girls who bullies Rosaline gets injured in real life in the same way as she did in the story, soon turns out of control. Now, it's Roz's friends who are in danger, and she doesn't seem to be able to do anything to stop it, other than to continue telling the story. The premise for WHAT THE STORYTELLER BRINGS is intriguing and the author handles it well, but I found myself more interested in the lives of these girls outside of the realm of the story that Rosaline tells. Their personal quirks and insecurities made Rosaline and her friends feel like real people to me, and I appreciated the author's portrayal of girls who aren't the most popular kids in school and don't have money to spend on designer clothing, but who still have strength and self-respect.
