What the Report Actually Said: Thirty Famous Mysteries, and the Documents That Explain Them
A film that ran on network television and was argued about for eleven years. A government press release quoted around the world, with one sentence left out of every quotation. A bronze blade said to carry a two-thousand-year-old anti-rust technology, and the laboratory study that tested 464 points on it.
Every chapter in this book does the same three things: it tells you the version you have heard, it puts the original document on the table and reads it out, and it shows you the gap between them.
This is not a book about what is true. It is a book about what is written down, and about the distance between a document and a fact - a distance that gets crossed carelessly in both directions. One exposed hoax is used to dismiss an entire subject. One unexplained case is used to wave away an exposure. Neither move is reading the document.
The cases run from a television autopsy to a medieval map, from a press release to a peer-reviewed paper, from a nineteen-seventies government investigation into cattle deaths to two archaeological reports on the same African stone city that reached opposite conclusions twenty-five years apart.
No photographs. No speculation about anyone's motives. No names. Just the reports, the measurements, the receipts - and what they actually say.
