What the Magdalene Saw

Magdala, a small trading village just north of Tiberius on the Sea of Galilee, shouldn't be the center of something that could change the world. This is a troubled time as the Romans, who have colonized Galilee and Tiberius is full of soldiers, vice, and conflict. The Jewish community in Magdala is wary of outsiders, of gentiles. The Jewish leaders stress the importance of not mixing with the Romans, of keeping their traditions pure, but it is not possible for these two cultures to remain separate. Here, a young Jewish woman named Mary lives with her parents waiting and hoping for a man to take her as his wife. However, in this great time, Mary feels a strong pull to neglect her duties as a young Jewish woman and seek out her own path beyond the Rabbi's teachings. She sees visions of lights inside her soul leaving her, and soon she sees only darkness. She fears she is cursed or possessed. She cannot speak to her family, for she knows they will see through her and abandon her. Darkness overcomes her. Alone, she must set out to heal her soul but finds so much more than just her own salvation. Her journey begins, one that will lead her to a great teacher, who can heal her and return light to her life; a Rabbi who can truly save her. This great teacher is unknown to most. This man is from Nazareth, a backwater village west of the Sea of Galilee, filled with day laborers and the poor. How does this son from a poor Jewish family draw crowds of lost souls looking for hope and healing? While others look to him for answers and for healing, he is also fighting darkness. He too is looking for salvation; he too needs respite from loneliness; he too needs light. This is a journey that will lead to an unexpected place in a very familiar story.
