An ambitious young man finds more than he'd bargained for when he buys a used P C at an auction. The computers previous owner was an author and had died in suspicious circumstances; he wouldn't discover exactly how, until it was too late. The P C had developed its own programmes, which included a subliminal section in its file, allowing it to control the actions of its users.
